Protect your privacy.
A privacy-first toolbox for inspecting, verifying, and fixing common file issues. All processing happens locally in your browser.
Compute MD5, SHA-1, and SHA-256 checksums, verify a download, detect a file's real type from magic bytes, view or strip EXIF and GPS metadata, find duplicate files, and safely peek inside unknown files. New here? Start with our guides.
Your files never leave your device
All tools run completely in your browser using JavaScript. Your files are never uploaded and never leave your device. Even when you load a file from a URL, your browser downloads it directlyβour server never sees it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Every InspectFiles tool runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript and the Web Crypto API. Your files are never uploaded to our servers β even when you load a file from a URL, your browser fetches it directly.
Which hash algorithms are supported?
InspectFiles can compute MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512 checksums. SHA-256 is recommended for general-purpose integrity verification; MD5 and SHA-1 are provided for compatibility with legacy systems but are not cryptographically secure.
How does file type detection work?
The File Identity tool reads the first bytes of the file (the βmagic bytesβ or signature) and matches them against a database of known file formats. This is more reliable than trusting the filename extension, which can be incorrect or spoofed.
Can I remove EXIF metadata from photos?
Yes. The Metadata Stripper removes EXIF, GPS, and other embedded metadata from images directly in your browser, then lets you download the cleaned file. Nothing is sent over the network.
Does InspectFiles work offline?
Yes. Once the page is loaded, most tools work without an active internet connection because all computation happens locally in your browser.
Is InspectFiles free to use?
Yes. All tools on InspectFiles are completely free, with no signup and no ads. InspectFiles isnβt run to make money. Ads on a site this small would earn next to nothing, and they would mean loading third-party trackers onto a site built around privacy, which is not a trade worth making.
